Smederevo is a Serbian commercial and industrial center in the Danubian region. This city "lies" on the banks of the Danube, in the northeastern part of the country. Smederevo was even referred to as the capital of Serbia in the mid fifteenth century, at the time when Belgrade was under Hungarian rule.
In addition to ferrous metallurgy, important branches of economics of Smederevo are metal industry and agriculture. A considerable attention is devoted to the development and preservation of culture and cultural heritage. There are various cultural institutions formed to improve the education of younger generations. The locals usually promote historical facts in order not to forget a difficult historical development of the city, for which their ancestors fought.
Because of the terrain of Podunavlje, near Smederevo, it is difficult to determine the exact name of the prevailing climate. Mainly, it is a temperate continental steppe climate.
Smederevo Fortress is an unavoidable tourist attraction. It is one of the first in Europe and largest river forts in the Balkans and it was made as far back as 1430. Smederevo Fortress was built by despot Đurađ Branković. It resisted its numerous attackers and a significant number of the devastation suffered towards the end of the Second World War by British bombers is still visible.
Given that the tourism organization of Smederevo is one of the oldest ones in Serbia, first after Belgrade, it is clear that the city is investing in that particular branch of its economy.
