Lepenski Vir is one of the most important archaeological sites in the region and an unavoidable point on the map of Serbia's tourist attractions. This cultural monument was home to one of the most important prehistoric cultures. It is named after a large whirlpool located in the middle of the Danube in the Đerdap Gorge (Iron Gate Gorge) and it is the center of the National Park of Đerdap. On the right bank of the Danube, there is an archaeological complex that dates back to the Mesolithic period.
World's most famous archaeologists and anthropologists agree with the statement that Lepenski Vir is the most important archeological discovery of the twentieth century Europe and one of the most important archeological discoveries in the world.
Remains of religious architecture dating back to the period between 7000 BC to 6000 BC, were discovered at this site. Lepenski Vir was inhabited around 8000 BC by the first farmers in Europe. Numerous planned settlements were discovered here, with graves that testify to strange burial rituals, as well as plenty of masterfully crafted tools made of stone, bone and horn, various jewelry, monumental stone sculptures and tiles with carved symbols and signs, which are thought to represent the first human scripts (Vinča script). This archaeological site is known for its superbly carved stone figures of men with large eyes and fish-like lips. It can be said that the popular "Lepenci" are the site's trademark. Their purpose was the worship of idols of hunters and fishermen, whose lives and prosperity depended on the Danube.
Visiting such an "outdoor museum" should not be missed. The experience will be even more complete with the wide range of accommodation that is offered in the vicinity of the Đerdap National Park. You can find accommodation in private rooms, hotels, motels and hunting lodges. Archaeological site of Lepenski Vir is one of those destinations that are recommended for tourists who really want to get to know Serbia and its rich cultural and artistic heritage.
