The synagogue of Subotica is located in the city center and it is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
It was built by Budapestian architects Marce, Komor and Jakab Dežen in 1902, in the Art Nouveau style. The exterior is adorned with ornate decorations and Hungarian folk motifs. It has four small domes symbolizing the four corners of the world and the central dome that symbolizes the universe.
In 1974 it was designated a Monument of Culture and in 1990 a Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance.
In recent decades, the synagogue suffered major damage and from 1996 it is included in the list of 100 of the World’s Most Endangered Cultural Monuments.
